How to Dispose of Latex Paint?

Latex paint can be toxic to the environment and cause a mess if not disposed of properly. The last thing you want is fresh paint dripping from a garbage truck because you decided it was a good idea to throw it out as it is into your household trash.

Start by checking your local regulations for disposal guidelines and requirements. They may vary, but the general rule is that DRY PAINT is ok to throw out. Again, check local regulations for proper disposal guidelines.

The easiest way to dispose of latex paint is as follows:

  1. Combine equal parts of cat litter and leftover latex paint.
  2. Let it sit for about an hour.
  3. Throw it into the garbage.

Side note: There is commercial paint hardener in the market you can use to "dry out" paint.

Additionally, you can always opt to donate or recycle unused paint to be reused. If the paint is still usable and in good condition, consider donating it to a charitable organization that accepts paint donations.
